ECDC awards 77 M€ to strengthen EU/EEA Member States’ capacities to detect and identify SARS-CoV-2 variants
ECDC has awarded more than 77 M€ to 24 EU/EEA countries to strengthen whole genome sequencing and RT-PCR infrastructures within the countries’ national public health programmes.

ECDC supports EU/EEA Member States in rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 variants
ECDC and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) have launched a number of activities to help strengthen EU/EEA Member States’ capacity for detection of SARS-CoV-2 variants in the shorter and longer term. These activities are one of five action areas of the ‘HERA Incubator’, a new EU bio-defence preparedness plan against SARS-CoV-2 variants launched by the European Commission on 17 February 2021.

Public health impact of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern: scoping review protocol
Several SARS-CoV-2 variants have been identified. Some of these variants have mutations that (alone or in combination) may provide the virus with a selective advantage, such as increased transmissibility or the ability to evade the host immune response, or cause possible changes in pathogenicity, thus increasing disease severity.

Threat Assessment Brief: Emergence of SARS-CoV-2 B.1.617 variants in India and situation in the EU/EEA
The aim of this Threat Assessment Brief is to assess potential public health implications of B.1.617 variants for EU/EEA countries, with a focus on lineage B.1.617.2.
On 24 May, ECDC upgraded B.1.617.2 to a variant of concern, after new information became available on increased transmissibility and some impact on vaccine effectiveness, especially after one vaccine dose. The suggestions highlighted in the Threat Assessment Brief regarding options for response remain valid, particularly vaccination rollout as a high priority to reduce COVID-19 mortality by vaccinating those at risk of severe illness in the shortest time possible.

SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern pose a higher risk for hospitalisation and intensive care admission
Since the discovery of SARS-CoV-2, three variants of concern (VOC), first identified in the United Kingdom (B.1.1.7), South Africa (B.1.351), and Brazil (P.1), have been associated with higher transmissibility and severity of disease, with potential implications for acquired immunity or the effectiveness of current vaccines.
