West Nile virus in Europe in 2019 - human cases, updated 18 October
Between 11 and 17 October 2019, EU Member States reported four human cases in Greece (2) and Italy (2). Five cases were reported from EU neighbouring countries in Serbia (4) and North Macedonia (1).
West Nile virus in Europe in 2019 - infections among humans and outbreaks among equids and/or birds, updated 18 October
Between 11 and 17 October 2019, EU Member States reported four human cases in Greece (2) and Italy (2). In the same week, five outbreaks among equids were reported to the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) by Germany (3), France (1) and Greece (1).
Rapid risk assessment: Zika virus disease in Var department, France
On 1 October 2019, a case of locally acquired Zika virus (ZIKV) disease in France (Hyères city, Var department) was laboratory confirmed. To date, and based on ECDC’s epidemiological assessment, the probability of ongoing vector-borne local transmission in Hyères (and surrounding areas) is considered very low because current evidence does not indicate the existence of a more extensive cluster of ZIKV cases.
Influenza virus characterisation, September 2019
This is the tenth and final report for the 2018–19 influenza season. As of week 39/2019, 205 947 influenza detections across the WHO European Region had been reported; 99% type A viruses, with A(H1N1)pdm09 prevailing over A(H3N2), and 1.2% type B viruses, with 86 of 165 (52%) ascribed to a lineage being B/Yamagata.
Around half a million men who have sex with men in the EU need PrEP but cannot access it
This estimate on the “PrEP gap” in Europe was published in a paper in Eurosurveillance stating that 500 000 men who have sex with men in the European Union currently cannot access HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), despite being very likely to use it.
Monthly measles and rubella monitoring report, October 2019
Overall, case numbers of measles continued to decrease compared with the previous two months. France, Romania and Italy had the highest case counts with 107, 80 and 77 cases respectively. The case numbers of rubella changed little compared with the previous two months. Sixteen of the 25 cases (64%) were
reported by Poland.
