This edition of the Annual Report gives special attention to vaccine-preventable diseases and immunisation programmesin the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries. This edition was revised January and June 2010 and has authority over the print edition.

The sixth edition of the Annual Epidemiological Report on communicable diseases in Europe provides a comprehensive summary of surveillance data for 2010 and an analysis of the public health threats detected in 2011 through ECDC’s routine epidemic intelligence.

The fourth edition of the Annual Epidemiological Report on Communicable Diseases in Europe provides a comprehensive summary of surveillance data for 2008.

Annual Epidemiological Report for HIV/AIDS, 2014

This report is based on HIV surveillance data reported by 30 Member States of the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) (all except Germany) and AIDS data reported by 28 EU/EEA countries (all except Belgium, Germany and Sweden) for 2017. All countries annually report case-based data to the TESSy HIV/AIDS database in accordance with standard EU case definitions [4]. The database is jointly coordinated by ECDC and the WHO Regional Office for Europe.

In 2016, 29 444 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in the 31 countries of the EU/EEA, which equals a rate of 5.7 cases per 100 000 population

HIV infection remains a major public health concern in EU/EEA countries, with approximately 30 000new infections reported each year. In contrast, the overall number of AIDS cases has continued tosteadily decline thanks to the growing use of effective antiretroviral treatment.

The main topic for this Annual Epidemiological Report is healthcare-associated infections, including antimicrobial resistance.
