This edition of the Annual Report gives special attention to vaccine-preventable diseases and immunisation programmesin the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries. This edition was revised January and June 2010 and has authority over the print edition.

In 2017, 30 EU/EEA Member States reported 26 907 cases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Excluding the five countries that only reported acute cases, the number of cases, 26 262, corresponds to a crude rate of 6.7 cases per 100 000 population.

In 2016, 30 EU/EEA Member States reported 29 307 cases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, corresponding to a crude rate of 5.5 cases per 100 000 population.

The ECDC Communicable Disease Threats Report (CDTR) is a weekly bulletin for epidemiologists and health professionals on active public health threats. This issue covers the period 8-14 September 2019 and includes updates on Ebola virus disease, Group A streptococcus infection, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Vibrio growth in the Baltic Sea, measles and West Nile virus.

​This is the first report from ECDC on the enhanced surveillance of hepatitis B and C viral infections. It aims to describe basic trends and epidemiological features of both diseases across countries in the EU/EEA for the years 2006–2011.

This report is part of an ECDC project on the effectiveness of antenatal screening for HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis and rubella susceptibility in the EU/EEA.
