External quality assessment of laboratory performance – European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network (EARS-Net), 2018
This report provides an analysis of the external quality assessment (EQA) performance with antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of laboratories participating in the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network in 2018. A total of 860 laboratories (1 – 114 per country) from 30 EU/EEA countries participated in the EQA exercise. Six bacterial strains were used: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium and Streptococcus pneumoniae.
Outbreak of carbapenemase-producing (NDM-1 and OXA-48) and colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae ST307, north-east Germany, 2019
Germany has reported an outbreak of carbapenemase-producing (NDM-1 and OXA-48) and colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae sequence type (ST) 307. As of 21 October 2019, 17 patients in three hospitals and one rehabilitation clinic in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania in north-east Germany have been affected. Six of the 17 cases presented with clinical symptoms of infection, while 11 were identified as be carriers.
Country visit to Estonia to discuss policies relating to antimicrobial resistance
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Commission's Directorate General for Health and Food Safety jointly carried out this country visit to Estonia from 25 to 29 March 2019. The visit was carried out following the invitation from the competent authorities to assist them in the preparation of their national strategy for tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) based on a 'One Health' perspective.
