This report focuses on novel approaches to testing for sexually transmitted infections, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus that are relevant for the prevention and control of these infections at EU/EEA level.

This report gives an overview of the current status of STI and HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) in EU/EEA countries. It reviews HIV and STI prevention interventions targeted at MSM, and the evaluations of those interventions.

​ECDC’s final report on the implementation of the European Commission Communication and Action Plan to address HIV in the European Union and neighbouring countries concludes that these measures have had an important impact on HIV prevention. But additional efforts are required to further reduce HIV transmission in Europe.

​This report highlights the benefits of a comprehensive approach to disease prevention, integrating HIV and STI control programming in Europe into broader public health strategies.

​At the request of the Ministry of Health in Riga, a team of experts from ECDC and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction paid a technical visit to Latvia on 2–4 September 2014.

This guidance, based on a systematic review of the literature and expert opinion, suggests that there is good evidence to ensure that some key components are considered for inclusion in national and sub-national public health programmes in countries in Europe.

Scientific literature appears largely unable to show direct causality between internet use and STI trends. This report attempts to provide an overview of current research and apply the conclusions to the epidemiological situation in the EU/EEA.

This document outlines the steps necessary to implement a comprehensive and effective control programme. It also offers advice on how to monitor and evaluate such programmes in order to ensure their effectiveness.

The aim of the evaluation was to understand the use and impact of the 2010 HIV testing guidance in the EU/EEA, and to make recommendations for future steps by ECDC in this area, including, potentially, an updated guidance.
