ECDC delivered Training courses for communicable disease outbreak investigation in years 2007, 2008 and 2009 within a framework contract and more than 400 epidemiologists were trained. Still constant need was perceived and articulated from EU Member states. ECDC therefore decided to deliver new set of courses with the same aim.

​ECDC Director Marc Sprenger addressed MEPs of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety regarding the ongoing Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa.

​​On the occasion of the 18th European Health Forum Gastein, ECDC, in cooperation with DG Health and Food safety of the European Commission, hosted a lunch workshop. The session aimed to identify existing gaps and explore what needed to be strengthened or further developed to ensure resilient health systems in Europe.

Emerging diseases and outbreak investigations, whole genome sequencing-based surveillance and public health risks related to animal and food imports to the EU/EEA were some of the topics under discussion during the Food- and Waterborne Diseases and Zoonoses Network meeting.

​This was the first meeting of the advisory group for evidence-based guidance for the prevention of infectious diseases among newly arrived migrants in the EU/EEA.

​This workshop focused on the protection of human health during avian influenza outbreaks.

According to the Ministry of Health of Romania, 12 children, aged between 5-16 months in Arges county attended the District Paediatric Hospital in Bucharest for vomiting and diarrhoea, with or without dehydration, and suspected Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) between January 29 and 9 February. Three of the cases have died, three are under dialysis in ICU , five are admitted in a nephrology ward and one has been discharged. No causative agent has been identified yet.

Due to the arrival of  refugees in Greece, ECDC, the European Commission and Greek authorities continue to closely monitor the situation to rapidly identify and assess potential public health threats related to communicable diseases.
