SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands – ECDC supports World Hand Hygiene Day 2022

Campaign

The 5 May marks World Hand Hygiene Day, a World Health Organization initiative that aims to raise awareness of the importance of hand hygiene in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, thus protecting patients from healthcare-associated infections.

Healthcare-associated infections are infections acquired by patients during their stay in hospitals or other healthcare facilities. Although some of these infections can be treated easily, others may seriously affect a patient’s health, increase their stay in the hospital, and sometimes even result in their death.

ECDC supports World Hand Hygiene Day and wants to show that good hand hygiene is a simple, yet effective way to prevent infections, and is the most important measure for preventing the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms and other healthcare-associated infections.

Unite for safety: clean your hands!

This year's theme for World Hand Hygiene Day is Unite for safety: clean your hands! It focuses on recognising that we can build a culture of safety and quality by cleaning our hands. Additionally, a strong quality and safety culture will encourage healthcare workers to clean their hands at the right time and with the right products.

To prioritise clean hands in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, people at all levels need to believe in the importance of hand hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC) to save patients’ lives, by acting as key players in achieving the appropriate behaviours and attitudes. In other words, healthcare workers, as well as people accessing hospitals and healthcare facilities, need to unite on ensuring they have clean hands and help save lives.
