During the week 1-7, ECDC monitored several EU and non-EU threats.

On 4 July 2012, Germany reported a third case injecting drug user had died of anthrax. This last case is of cutaneus anthrax. Microbiological investigations suggest that the strain in the first 2012 cases is identical or almost identical to the strain from the 2009-2010 cases.

In relation to the ongoing travel-associated cluster of Legionellosis in Calpe, Spain, ECDC has been informed of 14 cases of Legionnaires' disease fallen ill in week 26 after having stayed in the hotel. The hotel is currently closed, extensive investigations are ongoing and ECDC has deployed a mission related to the outbreak investigation.

Among the non-EU threats, the CDTR reports of the 53 people that contracted cholera in Manzanillo, a city in the eastern province of Granma (Cuba), and of the deaths of three people that died from the bacterial disease. During the period 29 June to 05 July 2012, four new polio cases were reported by WHO.

Concerning the results of the enhanced surveillance of threats during the 2012 UEFA football cup, no major health events were reported this week through the enhanced surveillance for EURO 2012 by health authorities.
