The joint meeting report by ECDC and the WHO Regional office for Europe summarises on their second joint influenza meeting held in Warsaw from 30 May to 1 June 2012. It provides short overviews of working group sessions as well as conclusions and recommendations.
The main objectives of the meeting were to:
- provide a situation update on the 2011-2012 influenza season, with respect to epidemiology, virology and vaccination;
- review developments in the surveillance of severe disease and in mortality monitoring;
- prepare for the upcoming 2012–2013 influenza season.
This report describes how influenza surveillance in the WHO European Region and EU/EEA Member States will continue, supported by ECDC and the WHO Regional Office. Topics around seasonal influenza vaccines were major features of the meeting. In addition, key–note lectures by a leading clinician from the European Respiratory Society and the Coordinator of the Influenza programme at WHO headquarters put European surveillance in a wider context.
