Joint report by ECDC and WHO Regional office for Europe on their annual influenza meeting 2012
14 Nov 2012
ECDC

The joint meeting report by ECDC and the WHO Regional office for Europe summarises on their second joint influenza meeting held in Warsaw from 30 May to 1 June 2012. It provides short overviews of working group sessions as well as conclusions and recommendations.

The main objectives of the meeting were to:

  • provide a situation update on the 2011-2012 influenza season, with respect to epidemiology, virology and vaccination;
  • review developments in the surveillance of severe disease and in mortality monitoring;
  • prepare for the upcoming 2012–2013 influenza season.

This report describes how influenza surveillance in the WHO European Region and EU/EEA Member States will continue, supported by ECDC and the WHO Regional Office. Topics around seasonal influenza vaccines were major features of the meeting. In addition, key–note lectures by a leading clinician from the European Respiratory Society and the Coordinator of the Influenza programme at WHO headquarters put European surveillance in a wider context.
