Spain confirms first human case of Influenza A(H1N1) virus in Europe

Earlier today the Spanish Minister of Health has confirmed a human case of Influenza A(H1N1) virus (swine influenza) in a traveller returning from Mexico. The onset of mild influenza-like symptoms was on 25 April, three days after returning from Mexico. The patient, a young male, is currently hospitalised in isolation and treated with oseltamivir.

A total of 20 close contact persons were identified. They are currently quarantined in their homes, under prophylactic treatment with oseltamivir and they are actively followed by the Spanish public health services. As of 27 April (15:00) 18 further persons are currently under investigation in Spain.
