West Nile fever in humans is a notifiable disease at the European Union (EU) level according to European Commission Decision 2009/312/EC. The case definition for reporting human cases of West Nile fever at EU level is outlined in Commission Decision of 28/IV/2008
Factsheet for health professionals
West Nile (WN) fever results from infection by the West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne arbovirus of the genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae. The virus was first isolated in 1937 in the blood of a woman of the West Nile province in Uganda, who was suffering from a mild febrile illness.
