Understanding of and outbreak management (self-isolation, infection control, academic continuity), is essential to minimize the impact on both the institutions and their surrounds.

Health care workers (HCWs) are often the first priority group for H1N1 pandemic vaccination. There are three prime reasons for their being immunised: protecting their patients, personal protection and maintaining a service. Initial data from seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns and surveys of intentions of health care workers suggests vaccine coverage can be less than desirable. At the same time vaccination needs to be made much easier for HCWs to achieve high coverage in order to protect their patients and themselves.

This was with a view to WHO developing recommendations on the distribution and use of pandemic influenza vaccines. The survey found that production of the vaccine for the Northern Hemisphere 2009-2010 season was well advanced and would be completed by the end of July at a total of 493 million doses, up from the 2008-9 total of 470 million. When considering the best-case for production of a pandemic vaccine companies reported they would be able to produce 4.9 billion doses in a year with a weekly production at best of 94.5 million doses. A comment is added by ECDC concerning the difficulties that are faced in realising this potential.
