The Croatian Institute of Public Health (CIPH) reports an increase in number of mumps cases associated with the use of a domestically produced vaccine against mumps, measles and rubella (MMR). In 2010, 122 people developed adverse reactions following inoculation with the vaccine; of these, one person developed rubella and 111 children developed mumps. Compared to 2009, the incidence of post-vaccination mumps cases linked to the domestically-produced MMR vaccine has more than doubled in 2010. The children who developed mumps were either vaccinated for the first time or previously received a first dose of the domestically-produced vaccine or another imported vaccine at the age of one.
This specific vaccine is not in use in any EU/EEA/EFTA Member State. ECDC emphasizes the importance to improve vaccination coverage with MMR vaccines in the EU countries, reassuring that MMR vaccines used in the EU present a very high safety profile. Cases of mumps reported in the EU are usually occurring either in persons never vaccinated or in persons that have lost their immunity with time (waning immunity).
